Taliban threats: More army troops arrive in Chitral

After Taliban threats, more army troops have arrived in Chitral to enhance security along the border with Afghanistan.

infiltration and open threats of attacks from Afghanistan, two more units of the army have been moved to Chitral to strengthen security, sources in the military told

It may be noted that army has already been deployed in the border areas in Arandu and other southern parts of Chitral after the militants penetrated from Afghanistan and killed about 40 Chitral Scouts personnel last year. In the recent weeks, Taliban have opened fire from across the border with their fugitive leaders openly threatening to attack the area in the coming days.

The sources told that two units of the army – about 1,500 personnel in each unit – have been sent to Chitral. Some of them have already reached Chitral while the remaining were being dispatched there. These army personnel would be deployed in the border areas of Garum Chashma and Boroghil.

It may be noted that soon after the attack on Chitral Scouts posts last year, Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani visited Chitral and was also taken to Boroghil.

On return to Rawalpindi, Gen Kayani reportedly contacted the federal government and stressed the need to urgently repair the road to Boroghil from Mastuj which is at present in a very dilapidated condition.
