Booni: The Chitral Heritage and Environment Protection Society (CHEPS) held a plantation and seed-soaking event, marking the formal launch of an ambitious project to transform an existing nursery into a hub for climate-resilient flora.

The ceremony, held at the CHEPS nursery site in Booni Gol, was attended by Deputy Commissioner Upper Chitral Imran Khan, elders and a large number of children, reflecting a strong local commitment to environmental protection amidst global climate challenges.

This initiative is the first of its kind organized to celebrate the anticipated visit of Prince Rahim Aga Khan to Chitral, noting that the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) had been working globally for decades on environmental conservation.

Participants actively took part in planting and preparing seeds for indigenous and eco-friendly species, including Bushonjoor, Shatung, Saboktron, Bop Apple, various grape varieties, and mulberry. These species were specifically selected for their ability to thrive in the local climate and their vital role in restoring the local ecosystem.

This initiative is part of a detailed CHEPS work plan that includes improving nursery infrastructure, cultivating climate-resilient plants, conducting community awareness sessions, and providing technical support with rigorous monitoring over the next 12 months to boost indigenous plant production.

Expressing his gratitude to the guests and participants, CHEPS Chairman Rehmat Ali Jaffardost stated that with the presence of the deputy commissioner and the enthusiasm of the community, they were fully prepared to improve the local ecosystem, promote sustainable plantation techniques, and build resilience against climate change.

The project’s expected outcomes include the restoration of indigenous flora, increased availability of eco-friendly plants, enhanced public participation, and strengthened environmental protection for Upper Chitral.
