ISLAMABAD: In a tragic incident, 14 newborn babies were killed after a fire broke out in the nursery of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad on Wednesday morning.
According to rescue sources, the fire reportedly started after an air-conditioning compressor exploded inside the nursery. Rescue teams rushed to the scene and began efforts to extinguish the blaze and evacuate patients from the affected area.
Hospital sources said that 15 newborn babies were present in the nursery when the fire erupted. A female doctor managed to rescue only one baby, while the remaining 14 newborns reportedly died in the incident.
The cause of the fire is yet to be independently confirmed, and further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the deaths are awaited.
Rescue and hospital authorities are expected to investigate the incident to determine how the fire started and whether any safety measures were in place inside the nursery.
The tragic incident has raised serious concerns over fire safety arrangements and emergency response systems in critical hospital areas, particularly neonatal wards where newborn babies require constant care and protection.
