GILGIT: The Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) has urged authorities to launch an immediate search and rescue operation for around 10 climbers feared missing after an avalanche struck Broad Peak.
The avalanche hit a group of mountaineers on Thursday afternoon, and contact with the climbers has remained cut off for several hours. Among those feared missing are renowned Nepali climber Nims Dai and Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi of Hunza.
The ACP said it is in constant contact with government authorities and relevant agencies to arrange helicopters and other available rescue resources. The club stressed that weather and operational conditions would be key factors in determining how quickly the search can begin.
Sources at Broad Peak Base Camp have also called for an urgent helicopter rescue mission, saying every effort should be made to locate the missing climbers as soon as possible.
At 8,047 metres, Broad Peak is the world’s 12th-highest mountain. Located in the Karakoram range near K2, the peak is known for its harsh conditions and demanding climbing routes.
