SKARDU: The bodies of eight climbers who went missing after an avalanche on Broad Peak have been recovered, while a search and rescue operation for two remaining climbers is still underway.
According to officials, the bodies of four more climbers were located on Broad Peak, bringing the total number of recovered bodies to eight.
Of the four bodies recovered earlier in the morning, three were transported to Skardu by helicopter. Rescue teams continue efforts to locate the remaining two missing climbers.
GB Minister for Tourism Neknam Karim said all possible efforts were being made to trace the missing climbers. He added that the Tourism Department’s team was providing logistical support for the search and rescue operation.
The missing climbers were from the United States, China, Nepal and Oman, along with Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi.
Located in the Karakoram mountain range, Broad Peak is the world’s 12th highest mountain, standing at an elevation of 8,047 metres.
The Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) had urged authorities to launch an immediate search and rescue operation for around 10 climbers feared missing after an avalanche struck Broad Peak.
The avalanche hit a group of mountaineers on Thursday afternoon, and contact with the climbers has remained cut off for several hours.
