Call for Extension in LG Tenure Termed Unrealistic, Undemocratic

Chitral, March 9, 2026: As the four-year constitutional term of local government institutions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa nears completion, demands by local government representatives for an extension of their tenure and increased financial support have sparked debate, with critics calling the move unrealistic and contrary to democratic norms.

The term of local representatives elected in the first phase will end in March this year, while the tenure of those elected in the second phase will conclude in June. However, during this period, local government representatives in various parts of the province have launched protests demanding an extension of their tenure along with additional funds.

Observers note a clear contradiction in these demands. For the past four years, many of the same representatives have repeatedly described the current local government system as weak, ineffective, and lacking real authority.

Critics argue that if the system was truly powerless and deprived of resources, then the demand for extending the same system raises serious questions.

Experts said that local government institutions are constitutional bodies established under the Local Government Act. Therefore, once their tenure ends, democratic principles require that fresh elections be held so that citizens can elect new representatives through a fair democratic process.

Amending the law merely to extend the tenure of existing representatives could set an undesirable precedent.

At the same time, many analysts agree that reforms in the current local government system are necessary. They suggest restoring the district council structure, empowering local governments with greater administrative authority, and ensuring the provision of adequate financial resources.

According to analysts, extending the tenure of current representatives would neither significantly benefit the public nor strengthen the local government system. Instead, timely elections and meaningful reforms are seen as the most effective way to ensure a stronger and more functional system of local governance.
