ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Tourism Sardar Yasir Ilyas has announced that the government will establish Special Tourism Zones (STZs) across Pakistan as a central pillar of its new 10-year national tourism policy.
In a recent TV interview, Ilyas said the government aims to revive the neglected tourism sector by transforming key areas into regulated, investment-friendly tourism hubs.
These Special Tourism Zones will offer attractive incentives for foreign investors, create employment for local communities, and ensure sustainable development in scenic and culturally rich regions.
“We are designing these zones to meet international standards and to give tourists world-class experiences while benefiting the local economy,” Ilyas said.
He confirmed that federal and provincial governments will jointly plan and implement the tourism policy to ensure full support and cooperation across the country. Each province will help identify potential tourism zones based on natural beauty, cultural heritage, and strategic accessibility.
The zones will include infrastructure for hotels, resorts, adventure activities, and cultural experiences, and will operate under streamlined regulations to simplify business entry for investors.
He spoke about updates on upcoming projects in Islamabad such as a zipline, chairlift, safari zoo, and theme park, all aligning with the broader goal of creating dedicated tourism environments.
He also highlighted efforts to integrate religious and historical tourism, such as restoring Sikh gurdwaras and promoting the Gandhara civilization, within these zones when appropriate.
Ilyas emphasized that by focusing on Special Tourism Zones, the government will stimulate economic growth, generate jobs, and reshape Pakistan’s international image as a modern, vibrant, and welcoming destination.
