FIA to probe KP’s fake driving license cases

PESHAWAR: The KP government has decided to probe complaints regarding issuance of fake driving licenses by its transport department, through the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

Earlier last month, the transport department had formed a committee to investigate the alleged use of fake Pakistani driving licenses to obtain licenses in Hong Kong and Australia by some people. The probe was prompted by letters from National Accountability Bureau and the Foreign Office over complaints about several fake driving licenses issued by the department.

Hong Kong’s Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) had requested assistance from NAB through a letter on Jan 19, saying 89 Pakistani applicants obtained Hong Kong’s driving licences by producing fake Pakistani driving licences and false verification letters.

Now Chief Secretary Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry has decided that the issuance of the fake driving licenses would be investigated by the FIA. He took the decision after receiving a report from the transport department which said the complaints received from abroad were true.

The report also pointed out several flaws in the software of the transport department that was sued to issue the computerized driving licenses. The transport department in its report recommended that the services of the IT Board may be hired to remove the flaws in the software.
