Sadiq Khan wins third term as London mayor

LONDON: Sadiq Khan of the Labor Party made history by winning the election to the mayor of London for the third consecutive term.

On the other hand, the Tories were routed in the local government elections.

Khan was first elected mayor in May 2016 when he defeated billionaire Zac Goldsmith, the brother PTI founder Imran Khan’s ex-wife Jamaima. Before that, Khan, 53, remained member of the British Parliament from 2005 to 2016.

Khan this time defeated Conservative candidate Susan Hall by more than 276,000 votes.

He won nine of the 14 constituencies including two gains from the Tories. Over 2.4 million votes were cast showing a turnout of 42.8 percent.

Speaking after his victory was declared at City Hall in east London, Mr Khan said: “It is the honour of my life to serve the city that I love. I am beyond humbled right now,” he added, according to BBC.

It may be noted that Khan’s parents had migrated to London. His father worked as a bus driver in London and Khan was born in 1970 and brought up in a flat provided by the government.
