Roads blocked in Chitral after heavy snowfall

CHITRAL: The Lowari tunnel road between Chitral and Dir has been reopened after removing snow, said the office of the deputy commissioner Lower Chitral on Tuesday. 

It said there is about 62 inch of snow on the Chitral side and 70 inch snow on the Dir side of the tunnel. Transporters have been asked to avoid nighttime travel and to use snow chain. The approach road to the tunnel was closed by the district administration four days ago.

Meanwhile, work is underway to reopen roads blocked by the recent unprecedented snowfall in both Lower and Upper Chitral.

According to officials, the approach road to Lowari tunnel was cleared of snow but avalanches were frequently blocking the main road on Dir side, so people should avoid unnecessary travel.

Machinery is on site to ensure the road road is opened for all types of traffic.

The main Chitral-Mastuj road is also being cleared of debris and snow and today the blockade near Phuk Kel bridge in Upper Chitral was reopened, said office of the DC Upper Chitral.

\"BlockedHuge boulders have also blocked the road at Nerdit Gol area in Lower Chitral which were being removed. The road to Yarkhun is blocked at different points due to avalanches starting from near the bridge at Khotan Lasht.

Meanwhile, a large number of people were stranded in Chitral and other areas for over four days due to the blockade of roads.

The weather is clear and sunny today but the Met Office had said that a new wet spell would start in different parts of the country from Thursday.
