Gandapur elected KP chief minister

Irshadullah Khan

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly members elected Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Ali Amin Khan Gandapur as the chief minister on Friday in what was a one-sided contest against PML-N candidate Dr Ibadullah.

The Dera Ismail Khan-based Gandapur bagged 90 votes while his opponent candidate bagged 16 votes. With two-third majority in the house, the PTI grabbed the chief minister spot for the third consecutive term.
As per procedure, the members were asked to head towards and stand in the lobby dedicated to the candidate they are supporting. Those backing Gandapur for the CM spot were moved to Lobby 2 while Dr Ibadullah supporters stood in Lobby 1.

After his election as chief minister, Gandapur said the PTI did not win the elections with support of the ‘third hand’ but because people placed their trust in Imran Khan’s 22 years of struggle. He demanded quashment of FIRs registered against the PTI workers in connection with the May 9 incidents.

Talking to this correspondent, the newly-elected CM reiterated anti-corruption narrative and announced a war against corruption in the province. He promised to protect minorities and invest in human resource, education and health.
