Electioneering ends with impressive power shows across Chitral

CHITRAL: On the last day of the election campaign on Tuesday, candidates of political parties for the one National Assembly and two Provincial Assembly seats arranged impressive public gatherings in different parts of Chitral.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), all activities related to the elections by political parties and their candidates ended at midnight between February 6 and 7.

The embattled PTI arranged power shows in Chitral town, Drosh and Booni which were addressed by its candidates for the three seats, including Abdul Latif, Fatehul Mulk Ali Nasir and Surya Bibi. Party’s former reserved seat MPAs Fouzia Bibi and Wazirzada were also present.

Despite being cornered by the establishment with its founder and former prime minister Imran Khan jailed and its iconic symbol of ‘Bat’ taken back by the election commission, the party has managed to maintain its grassroots popularity in Chitral.

The vindictive legal and administrative actions against the PTI since its government was ousted in April 2022 and intensified after the May 9 violence by its workers put the party at the receiving end. However, as these actions were targeted at a single party and its leaders, of late these have started creating sympathy even among those who had no affiliation with the PTI.

And despite all odds and there being no hope for the party to come to power in the near future, the PTI can still give a surprise on the polling day.

Meanwhile, PML-N candidate for NA-1 Shahzada Iftikharuddin and PTI-P’s Shahzada Khalid Pervez, who is contesting for PK-2, also addressed a big public gathering in Drosh.

Addressing the gathering, Shahzada Iftikhar mentioned the projects launched and completed in Chitral by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif during the tenure of his party from 2013 to 2018.

He said the PML-N was again coming into power and Nawaz Sharif will be the prime minister for the fourth time and will not only complete the incomplete schemes but will also initiate more mega projects.

In a audio message, Nawaz Sharif said that after coming to power he would complete the projects launched by his previous government, including the Garam Chashma road, installation of gas plants in Chitral. Moreover, more hydel power houses would be established in Chitral and steps would be taken to promote tourism in the scenic valley.

The PPP also held its main election gatherings in Chitral, Drosh, Booni and corner meetings in different parts of Chitral.

Jamaat-e-Islami candidates Molana Abdul Akbar and Haji Maghfirat Shah held their concluding canvassing in Chitral and Garam Chashma. Maghfirat Shah told ChitralToday that independent candidate Hussain Ahmed of Garam Chashma on Tuesday withdrew from the race and announced to support him for PK-2.

Talha Mahmood public gathering in Chitral. On the other hand, JUI-F’s Talha Mahmood rushed to Upper Chitral after cancelling his planned public meeting in Chitral town and addressed a meeting at Kosht.

He told the gathering that he has decided to contest election from Chitral and serve the people of the backward area.

It may be noted that candidates of almost all other parties have jointly lodged a complaint against Talha Mahmood for using money and other resources to buy votes in Chitral.

They said the JUI-F candidate through the use of resources openly violated the elections rules and also promoted corruption in the local politics.
