Action sought against flour mafia in Chitral

Public protest after Eid if flour mills not closed

CHITRAL: Representatives of political parties and civil society on Sunday demanded action against wheat flour mafia and millers and restoration of the old system of supply of wheat from the government sale points to the consumers.

Because of the stoppage of selling wheat from the government sale points and availability of flour from mills, the consumers have not only been deprived of their right to access the wheat but they are also forced to purchase substandard flour from the mills.

Speaking at a press conference here, Jamaat-e-Islami Lower Chitral chief Molana Jamshed Ahmed and others said the local people were facing lots of issues at the hands of the flour mafia while the district administration remained a silent spectator.

He said the flour being sold to the consumers by mills was substandard and unfit for human consumption.

They called upon the provincial government to close down the flour mills in Chitral and order the restoration of the old system of the supply of wheat from the godowns.

They also condemned the registration of a police case on the complaint of a resident of Dir against three organizers of a protest demonstration against the issue in Drosh and said the administration was trying to silence the public over the issue.

They said the protesters had no grudge with the people of Dir, but were raising voice against the flour mafia who were backed by a welfare organization based in Dir, at the behest of which the FIR was registered in Drosh.

They warned that if the flour mills were not closed down, a public protest would be launched after Eidul Fitr.–Bashir Hussain Azad
