Chitralis end Islamabad protest on govt assurance

Irshadullah Khan

ISLAMABAD: The peaceful protest for the fundamental rights of Chitral led by Tehreek Tahafuz Haqooq-e-Chitral Chairman Pir Mukhtar Nabi and patron Shahzada Sirajul Mulk outside National Press Club Islamabad was called off on Tuesday on the assurance of the district administration of Chitral and the adviser to the prime minister, Engineer Amir Muqam.

The protest was first held in Peshawar and then in Islamabad continued for four weeks and Pir Mukhtar was on hunger strike for eight days.

Among others, the protesters were demanding supply of electricity to Chitral, construction of roads and against leasing of minerals to outsiders and rampant cutting of forests.

They said even after completion of the 108 megawatt Golen Gol hydro power project Chitral was facing power crisis. The protesters have vowed to continue their peaceful sit-in till resolution of the issues.

“We are peaceful, patriotic and decent citizens, even in this modern era we have been deprived of our basic rights. We are the citizens of the state and we want our basic rights.  In this regard, the ongoing four-week dharna and eight-day hunger strike camp in Islamabad is being terminated today on the assurance of the district administration of Chitral and the adviser to the prime minister, Engineer Amir Muqam,” said the protesters.

The adviser to the prime minister was given a deadline of three weeks to fulfill the demands. If the demands were not accepted, the Chitralis will come out on the streets again to get their issues resolved.
