Heavy snowfall feared; people advised to avoid unnecessary travels

CHITRAL: In a weather alert, people of Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan have been asked to avoid unnecessary travels till the end of the current month (January).

Meanwhile, Chitral town and nearby areas received another spell of rain and snowfall on Saturday afternoon.

In an advisory, the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (formerly FOCUS) said according to the weather forecast there were chances of heavy snowfall from Jan 19.
Because of the rain/snowfall in Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan, there will will accumulation of snow on glaciers and avalanches and landslides in the area. The agency asked the dwellers to take precautionary steps in accordance with the weather conditions and avoid unnecessary travels, especially in landsliding and avalanche prone areas.

They should also avoid living or staying in houses which might not be in a position to withstand the heavy snow. Make precautionary measures at the village level to protect from avalanches and landslides and cooperate with the staff of CERT.

While travelling, keep ropes, spades and chains in your vehicles so that these could be used to avoid being stuck in heavy snow. The heavy snowfall is poised to increase the intensity of cold wave so keep fuel, firewood and sufficient amount of food items in stock.
