CHITRAL: As the ‘Plant for Pakistan’ drive to plant 10 billion saplings across the country in five years was launched on Sunday, an environment activist from Chitral wanted to convey a message to Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Talking to ChitralToday, Rehmat Ali Jaffar Dost said it was highly important that trees should be planted in any area after proper research and preparations. He said only planting saplings would never serve the purpose rather proper maintenance and protection of the saplings was equally essential.
He said trees should be planted in accordance with the environment of the area after proper research otherwise these trees would leave a negative impact on the environment.
He said after establishing Islamabad as the new capital of Pakistan, the then president Ayub Khan had ordered plantation of different species brought from different parts of the country and most of them later became a nuisance for the residents of the capital.
He said though tree plantation drives had been launched in Pakistan, in Chitral it was the season of seed collection. He said on his initiative schoolchildren in Booni had recently pledged to collect seeds and sow them in their houses for planting 10,000 saplings in Booni and nearby villages.
He said there was also a need to develop greenery on mountains in Chitral where glaciers were fast melting not only threatening population by flooding but also destroying the sources of water for the whole country.
He called upon the government to announce a special package to carry out plantation drives in Chitral.
