Telenor wins Rs.1.9 bn contract to lay optical fibre cable in Chitral

The contract signing ceremony between USF & Telenor Pakistan held today at Islamabad where Minister of State for IT Ms. Anusha Rahman was the chief guest. According to the press statements, the Minister for IT has said that “through the rural telecom project in Chitral Lot an un-served population of around 1.2 million people residing in 1,173 muzas will get benefit”. According to the sources, the contract has been signed between USF and Telenor that marks the launch of telecom services to be provided by Telenor in the above-mentioned areas. Chief Executive Officer, Universal Service Fund, Mr. Faisal Sattar and Chief Executive Officer, Telenor, Mr. Michael Patrick Foley signed the contract while Minister for Information Technology, Ms. Anusha Rahman Khan was the chief guest at the ceremony. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Anusha Rahman Khan said that the Government of Pakistan is striving to increase the level of telecom penetration significantly in the under-served and un-served areas. She reiterated the present government’s determination to promote and support the initiatives to enhance Pakistan’s capacity to develop and produce a globally competitive telecom sector and industry. She was also pleased that with consistent efforts and spirit, Universal Service Fund is undertaking challenging and productive programs for the promotion of telecom related services. She further said that this project was surely another milestone achieved with the purpose of triggering technological growth in the country. The Chief Executive Officer Telenor, Mr. Michael Patrick Foley said that Chitral is one of the toughest regions for cellular coverage. We have upgraded our network to provide uninterrupted services even in extreme weather conditions.
