Agri office in upper Chitral shut for three years


CHITRAL, Nov 29: The farmers of Mastuj valley have demanded reopening of the local office of the agriculture department which remains closed for the last three years. closedThey were speaking at a meeting participated by farmers from Mastuj, Yarkhun and Laspur union councils here. The meeting was chaired by president of Farm Service Mohammad Sarir Khan. The farmers said the area was known for its production of best quality apples and pears, which were also supplied to national market. They said the staff posted to the local office had either been posted out or got retired. The farmers said the three union councils needed at least six field assistants to cover the vast area. They said yield of fruits and cereal crops had reduced to an abysmally low level as the farmers were deprived of standardised seeds, pesticides and fertilizers. The farmers said they had approached the authorities of agriculture department at provincial level but they showed cold shoulder to them. They said almost 100 per cent of the local households derived their sustenance from farming and the closure of the agriculture office had affected them beyond measure.–Zahiruddin]]>
