No more excuses from police

GILGIT: The chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, Mehdi Shah, has said after coming to power the PPP government took a number of initiatives to improve the working of the police in the region. [caption id="attachment_2448" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="CM Mehdi Shah"][/caption] He said the government increased the salaries of the police, provided them all the needed resources and arranged training opportunities at their doorsteps. Besides, their usual complaint of lack of weapons to deal with terror elements and criminals had also been met, he said, warning that from now onward no excuse would be accepted on part of the police if there was any laxity on their side in maintaining law and order. talking to media persons here, The chief minister also said that in the past policemen were inducted on the recommendation of religious leaders and his government also eliminated this culture and started making appointments strictly on merit. He said in the past policemen and officers had to go to other parts of the country to join training programmes but now they are getting trained in their home town. He said due to the poor law and order situation in the region, a large chunk of the resources of the backward region were being spent on law enforcement agencies. If there is peace, people of the area would reap the fruits and there would be development, he added. It may be noted that arms and ammunition worth Rs220 million have been given to the GB police by the army.
