Flour crisis in Khyber Pakthunkhwa and Chitral

Millers Reject Govt Flour Pricing Formula

Peshawar, Jan 22, 2026: Flour mill owners have rejected the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s proposed wheat and flour pricing formula, calling it unrealistic and harmful to the flour milling industry.
Addressing a press conference, Flour Mills Association President Naeem Butt said the price of wheat had reached Rs13,500 per bag, while the price of a 20-kilogram flour bag had increased to around Rs3,000. He warned that flour prices may rise further during Ramazan if the supply of flour from Punjab was not restored.
He said the flour milling industry was already facing heavy losses and criticized the government’s decision to provide only 1,500 tonnes of wheat, terming it insufficient to meet the market demand. According to him, the formula announced by the KP government was unacceptable and could lead to the closure of flour mills.
“The proposed formula is not workable. Implementing it will shut down the flour mill industry. We do not want to mislead the public,” he said.
The association urged the provincial government to review its policy and adopt practical measures to ensure a stable wheat supply and control flour prices, especially ahead of Ramazan.
