IHC issues notices on Latif’s appeal against conviction

ISLAMABAD, Nov 5, 2025: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday issued notices to the prosecution on an appeal filed by MNA from Chitral, Abdul Latif, challenging his conviction in a case related to the May 9, 2023 riots.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Muhammad Azam and Justice Asif heard the matter. The court also issued a notice under Section 426 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) on the request of the defence counsel. This section allows for the suspension of a sentence while an appeal is pending.

Senior lawyer Dr. Babar Awan appeared on behalf of Abdul Latif.

Abdul Latif was convicted by an anti-terrorism court for his alleged role in the attack on the Ramna Police Station in Islamabad during the May 9 protests that followed the arrest of Imran Khan. He was accused of participating in violence, including setting vehicles on fire and assaulting police officers.

Following his conviction, he was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, which led to his disqualification as a Member of the National Assembly under Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution, as the law bars anyone sentenced to more than two years from holding public office.

The IHC has directed the prosecution to submit its response, and further hearing of the case has been adjourned to a later date.
