SCO summit Shehbaz Sharif address 2024 Islamabad

Sartaj urges PM for bold reforms and regional peace

ISLAMABAD: Amid rising regional tensions and renewed concerns over relations between Pakistan and India, former FPCCI coordinator and political figure Sartaj Ahmad Khan has callef for transformative national leadership and a forward-looking regional policy framework.

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, he emphasized that Pakistan is at a pivotal crossroads, where the legacy of past conflicts must give way to a new era defined by inclusive governance, regional cooperation, and people-centric policy making.

\”Pakistan has paid a heavy price for prolonged instability in South Asia. It is now time to reorient our national priorities towards sustainable economic growth, equitable education, water security, and regional peace,\” Khan wrote.

Referring to the latest tensions with India, Khan noted that such crises also present an opportunity for bold diplomacy. He proposed several non-traditional but practical measures, including a UN-supervised inclusive dialogue on Kashmir involving representatives from both sides of the region, a joint reassessment of the Indus Waters Treaty in light of climate change, independent international investigations into incidents like the Pulwama attack and the Jaffar Express tragedy.

Moreover, he stressed the establishment of a regional counter-terrorism mechanism involving Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, and neighboring states.

Steps, he added, should also be taken to revive regional trade and people-to-people connections, including easing of visa regimes and restarting bilateral sports ties.

Highlighting Pakistan’s untapped economic and human potential, Khan urged the prime minister to initiate a new national economic vision centered on innovation, youth entrepreneurship, and knowledge-based development.

\”This is a time not for reactive politics, but for visionary statesmanship. A courageous shift in our strategic thinking can not only redefine Pakistan’s future but reshape the destiny of South Asia,\” the letter added.
