Activists raise Chitral\’s climate change issues with PM\’s coordinator

ISLAMABAD: A delegation of environment activists met the prime minister\’s coordinator on climate change and discussed environmental issues in Chitral.

The delegation from the Chitral Heritage and Environmental Protection Society (CHEPS) was led by its Chairman Rehmat Ali Jaffar Dost at the meeting with Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister for Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, says a press release.

The meeting focused on pressing environmental issues affecting Chitral, particularly the alarming rate of climate change and its devastating impact on the region.

During the discussion, the delegation highlighted the significant role of CHEPS in environmental conservation through various initiatives such as seed collection campaigns, cleaning drives, environmental awareness programs, and plantation projects in schools, colleges, and other institutions.

The delegation also presented a report on the current climate crisis in Chitral, citing the increasing frequency of floods and avalanches as a direct consequence of climate change.

A major concern raised was the accelerated melting of glaciers, which is occurring at a much faster pace than in previous years. This phenomenon poses a severe threat to the region’s ecological balance and livelihoods.

Discussions also revolved around the need for collaborative planning and implementation of climate adaptation strategies by the government in partnership with civil society organizations.

CHEPS emphasized the urgency of sustainable environmental policies and proactive measures to mitigate the impact of climate change in vulnerable areas like Chitral.

\”The meeting marked a significant step towards strengthening cooperation between governmental and non-governmental entities in addressing the climate crisis and ensuring a sustainable future for Chitral and beyond,\” claimed CHEPS in its statement.
