MNA warns govt to resolve Chitral's wheat crisis

Govt warned of consequences if Chitral\’s wheat crisis not resolved

ISLAMABAD: Moulana Abdul Akbar Chitrali on Thursday raised concerns in the National Assembly about the wheat crisis following the significant increase of its price in Chitral.

Pointing out the issue in the National Assembly, he said the price of 100 kg wheat had risen abruptly from Rs6,000 to Rs11,615.

Moulana Chitrali explained that Chitral had limited cultivable land, comprising only 2pc of the total 14,850 square km, and lacked industrial activities. These factors contribute to the vulnerability of the local population to price fluctuations and increase.

Moulana Chitrali stated that he had already brought the matter under the notice of the prime minister, urging immediate action. The prime minister had promised that a meeting to discuss the matter would be organized soon.

Highlighting the potential consequences of the price hike, he said if the increased in the price was not reversed, the people of Chitral would resort to blocking roads and would not allow holding of the annual Shandur festival starting from July 7.

Moulana Chitrali appealed to the prime minister to take prompt notice of the issue and arrange a meeting to find out a resolution to the crisis.
