PARIS: Trump has just been speaking to the media in France, where he is meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron ahead of the G7 summit.
The US president said “The deal’s all signed.” Here is a summary of what else he said:
- Iran will not have a nuclear weapon
- It is important that oil prices are falling and stocks are rising
- On whether he would attend the signing ceremony on Friday: “I may be involved. I may not, but (Vice President) JD (Vance) was coming in for that specifically.”
- The text of the Iran deal will be released “sometime after Friday”
- There will be no sanctions relief until Iran does what they are supposed to
- The Strait of Hormuz “is already partially opened” and will be “completely open” on Friday.
A senior U.S. official earlier said the agreement between the United States and Iran has been signed by Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf.
The official also said the details of the agreement would be released within the next 24-48 hours and technical discussions would be launched later in the week.
The deal provides for an immediate opening of the Strait of Hormuz and lifting of the U.S. blockade on Iran, the official added.
There will also be a signing ceremony on Friday, the official said. Both sides had previously said the deal would be signed in Switzerland on Friday.
“You will see significant increase in traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, actually starting already, and that will ramp up slowly over time,” the U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said.
“We probably won’t return to normal in two weeks, but we will see a significant increase in strait traffic.”–Reuters
