Kalash people: culture, health and society

Chilim Joshi festival from tomorrow amid dwindling tourist arrival

CHITRAL: The annual Chilim Joshi Festival, also known as Joshi, will commence tomorrow (Monday) in the Kalash valleys of Bumburate, Rumbur and Birir.

The spring festival will continue till May 16 with cultural vibrancy, traditional dances, music, and prayers for a prosperous season.

Local residents have decorated homes and stocked food to welcome guests and the district administration has also made preparations to facilitate tourists. However, due to rising tensions between Pakistan and India, foreign tourist bookings have been cancelled, and local turnout remains uncertain.

According to Hotel Association president Abdul Khaliq, all accommodations were booked in advance, but mass cancellations have led to expected financial losses.

Despite the lower tourist presence, the Kalash community remains committed to celebrating their rich traditions through colourful attire, communal dances, and rituals seeking blessings for crops and livestock.
