ISLAMABAD: The New York City government has expressed its desire to hire services of qualified nurses from Pakistan to meet the shortage in its health centers.

A group of New York State Assembly and American Pakistani Public Affairs Committee members led by Deputy Speaker Phil Ramos is currently on a visit to Pakistan.

Mr Ramos held a meeting with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi in Islamabad on Saturday.

The Deputy Speaker of New York Assembly told the minister that there was a shortage of qualified nurses in the US and Pakistan has a lot of potential in this regard.

The minister said that Pakistan had plenty of qualified and skilled human resource including in the health sector. He said the government would take priority steps to send qualified and experienced nurses to the US.

The two sides at the meeting agreed to finalize a procedure for the hiring of Pakistani nurses in New York.

It may be mentioned here that after the Covid pandemic, the US has been facing an acute shortage of nurses in its health establishment. To overcome the shortage, a large number of nurses from India and Philippines working in the Middle East were hired.

However, the shortage still exists in the US, creating a lot of employment opportunities for nurses in Pakistan.
