HANDS urged to help more flood-hit people in upper Chitral

The shelter kits are being distributed among the affected families of the Charun, Kosht and Mulkhow union councils. Tehsil Council members Sardar Hakim, Allauddin, chairman village council Reshun Munir, chairman village council Charun Sher Alam, assistant commissioner Mastuj Mr Israr, chairman Biyar Local Support Organisation (BLSO) Zahiruddin Baber, BOD members, professors of the Degree College Booni and notables of the area attended the event. There were reports that some political leaders were trying to get HANDS shifted to lower Chitral. But the speakers at the function, including the elected members of the tehsil and village councils, appealed to the officials of HANDS to shift their activities to the flood-devastated areas of Torkhow, Laspur, Mastuj and Brep and Shagram where the affected people still remained without shelters and other basic facilities. HANDS’ district coordinator Zulfiqar Cheema said the manager BLSO contacted his organization regarding the flood destruction in Chitral and seeking assistance for the affected people. Upon this, HANDS representatives decided to assist the flood-hit people in Chitral. Mohammad Marri, the general manager social mobilization and disaster management programme, personally visited the area along with AKRSP and BLSO management. “After that, we started an assessment and already distributed shelter kits among 250 partially damaged households. Now we are distributing blankets, plastic sheet, solar light sleeping mates, CGI roofing sheet and wooden roof beams among the 500 families whose houses were fully damaged,” he added. ]]>

    Good work, but it is a pity that so much in Pakistan seems to depend on voluntary help rather than effective local government. And when there is government help, there is always the risk that fund will not be used in the proper way. I wish I knew the answer to this problem.
