Students engaged to protect eco-system

CHITRAL, April 4: With the assistance of USAID-Small Grant Ambassador’s Fund Programme, the Snow Leopard Foundation (SLF) is working in Chitral to help the local communities protect the fragile eco-systems. students copyThe project, snow leopard conservation through practical measures, has been launched in six villages – Mori Payeen, Barghuzi, Koghuzi, Kuju Payeen, Bokhtuli and Parsan. Under the project, the SLF Chitral has helped the communities in construction of predator’s proof corral, training community workers in animal husbandry, livestock vaccination and providing environmental education students through the establishment of student nature clubs. The predator proof corral will provide safe shelters for the livestock of the herder families which were prone to attacks of snow leopard and other carnivores and would also help control retaliatory killing of precious wildlife species. Under the project, more than 10,000 livestock were vaccinated twice a year. Similarly, by the establishment of nature clubs in schools more than 300 students were engaged in environment friendly activities like the celebration of international mountain day and international forest day. The students were also sensitized regarding conservation of forest, wildlife and natural resources.—GH Farooqui    ]]>
