Nawaz taking personal interest in Lowari tunnel, Senate body told

ISLAMABAD, Feb 7: The chairman of the National Highway Authority (NHA) on Thursday informed a meeting of the Senate committee on communications that the decision to open the under-construction Lowari tunnel in the winter for two days a week had jointly been taken by the army, the KPK government and the NHA. nawazBriefing the committee at a meeting, the NHA chairman, Shahid Ashraf Tarar, said that an additional amount of Rs17 billion was needed to get the over eight kilometers long tunnel completed by 2017. He said that in the current fiscal year only Rs1 billion had been allocated by the federal government. However, minister of state Sheikh Aftab Ahmed assured the committee that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was taking personal interest in the Lowari tunnel and the issue of fund shortage for the mega project would be resolved soon. The NHA chairman said that the government had to pay Rs0.6 million per day to the Korean construction company for opening the tunnel for traffic in the winter.
