PPP Chitral asks govt to open Lowari tunnel

CHITRAL, Nov 7: Former provincial minister and district president of Pakistan People’s Party Saleem Khan on Thursday called upon the federal government for early opening of Lowari tunnel. Addressing to a press conference along with other PPP leaders, including Burhan Shah advocate and Zahir Shah, the former provincial minister said that main road to Chitral had been blocked for vehicular traffic at Lowari top due to heavy snowfall. The National Highway Authority and the Korean construction company staff were not allowing passengers to use the under-construction Lowari tunnel, he added. The PPP leaders said a large number of passengers had been stranded at Dir upper and Ziarat waiting for the opening of the tunnel, facing great hardships because of paying double prices for hotel rooms and food. They said more than 200,000 Chitrali living in other parts of the country frequently travelled to and from their native town of Chitral. They said to add to their miseries, PIA flights had also been suspended due to bad weather. They demanded restoration of the previous schedule of PIA flights to address the problem. They also demanded an extension in the last date for the submission of applications to the public service commission because due to the closure of the roads candidates from Chitral could not submitted their applications on time. They demanded opening of Lowari tunnel for six hours on a daily basis. They warned that if the tunnel was not opened for traffic they would hold a strike against the authorities. They appealed to the chief minister for intervention in this matter and persuade the ministry of communication for opening of the Lowari tunnel.–GH Farooqui]]>
