Federal Govt to Fund 100MW Solar Power Project in GB

Islamabad, June 16, 2026: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to expedite work on a 100-megawatt solar power project in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Chairing a review meeting on the project, the prime minister instructed officials to ensure swift completion and maintain transparency throughout all stages, including third-party validation of the process.

Officials briefed the meeting that the project includes solarization of government buildings and residential areas across the region.

Around 18 megawatts of solar capacity will be installed for government buildings in Gilgit and Diamer divisions by December 2026, while similar work in Baltistan division is expected to be completed by October 2026.

In addition, work is underway on an 82-megawatt solar energy project aimed at providing electricity to households in key areas, including Gilgit, Skardu, Chilas, and Khaplu.

The meeting was attended by senior federal ministers, including and , along with other senior officials.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to promote renewable energy, improve electricity access, and reduce reliance on conventional power sources in the mountainous region.
