Shandur, June 11, 2026: The historic Shandur Polo Festival has commenced at the world’s highest polo ground, attracting thousands of spectators from Chitral, Gilgit-Baltistan and around the world.
Khyber Pakthunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi inaugurated the festival.
On the first day of the three-day mega event, Laspur A polo team defeated Ghizer team by 9 goals to 0.
Set against the backdrop of towering mountains and a scenic natural lake, the festival venue has come alive with a vibrant tent village accommodating visitors and polo enthusiasts.
The festival will feature five matches between teams from Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan during the opening two days, culminating in a highly anticipated final on June 13.
Known for its traditional freestyle polo, the Shandur event is one of Pakistan’s most iconic cultural and sporting festivals.
The festival traces its origins back to 1936, when it was first introduced by a British political officer in Chitral. After a hiatus of 46 years, it was revived in 1982 by then Deputy Commissioner Shakil Durrani.
Officials expect the event to boost tourism and promote the region’s rich cultural heritage, while providing thrilling entertainment to spectators.
