Draft Law Proposes Jail for Evicting Wives

ISLAMABAD, Aug 13: A bill has landed in the National Assembly proposing to punish anyone who unfairly evicts women from their homes.

PPP member Sharmila Faruqi introduced the bill on Tuesday. It seeks to amend the Pakistan Penal Code. The bill makes it a crime for a husband or family member to force a woman out of her home without cause.

Offenders could face three to six months in prison and a fine up to Rs200,000. Cases will be handled by a first-class magistrate.

The deputy speaker of the house has referred the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2025 to the relevant committee for review.
