Kamchatka, Russia — July 30, 2025: An 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s eastern coast on Tuesday.
The quake shook the Kamchatka Peninsula and triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific.The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit 136 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of 19 km.
Waves Hit Coastal Areas
Tsunami waves up to 4 meters hit several coastal towns. In Severo-Kurilsk, the waves damaged buildings and injured people. A school wall collapsed, but the building was empty.
Authorities told residents to move to higher ground. Emergency teams began evacuating Severo-Kurilsk.
Worst Since 1952. Experts called it Kamchatka’s strongest quake since 1952. They warned of aftershocks up to 7.5 magnitude in the coming weeks.
Tsunami Alerts Issued
Several countries issued alerts:Japan and the Philippines warned coastal areas. The U.S. issued warnings for California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. Canada warned British Columbia.
