BOONI: Severe flooding in Yarkhun river has placed a poor man’s home and properties of other residents in imminent danger in Jinali Koch village.
Despite the worsening situation, the district administration has not yet provided any assistance, raising serious concerns about the region’s disaster preparedness and the government’s responsiveness.
Irshad Ahmed, the affected resident, is struggling to save his belongings as the river continues to erode the land beneath and around his house. With no support from authorities or rescue services, he is moving his household items to safer ground on his own.
Speaking to ChitralToday, he said, “My house might not survive the river’s flow, but the administration could at least help me safeguard my belongings.”
Another resident said that the devastating impact of the recent disaster in our area has rendered several individuals homeless and caused significant land loss for many residents.
The following individuals have become homeless:
1. Sister of Ghaibi Ali
2. Muhammad Nabi
3. Iqbaluddin
4. Karim
5. Irshad Ahmad.
In addition, the land belonging to the following individuals has been severely damaged or completely lost:
1. Irshad Ahmad
2. Noor Afzal
3. Nizar
4. Musar
5. Mir Alam
6. Karim
7. Khalil Hussain
8. Shada
9. Gul Azam
10. Murad.
However, the lack of response from officials has sparked frustration and anger among local residents. Community members say the silence from the authorities is unacceptable, especially in a situation where timely intervention could prevent a family from losing everything.
One neighbor remarked, “If no action is taken now, a poor man will lose everything he owns.”
Locals are calling for immediate help for Irshad Ahmed and for the government to begin erosion control efforts in the area.
Many also emphasize the need for long-term planning and investment to protect other vulnerable homes along the banks of the river in Upper Chitral. Without urgent attention, they warn, more families could face similar threats in the near future.
This alarming situation underscores the urgent need for a more proactive and effective disaster management strategy in Upper Chitral.
As the region faces increasing threats from flooding and land erosion, residents are demanding stronger government action, better infrastructure, and a commitment to protecting lives and property.
