ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert for heavy rainfall and potential flooding in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and other parts of Pakistan from July 13 to 17.
According to the advisory, Swat and Panjkora rivers and their tributaries in KP face a high risk of flash flooding due to intense monsoon rains. Light flooding is also possible at Nowshera on the Kabul River. Authorities are urging residents in low-lying and riverside areas to remain vigilant, especially at night, and to avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges, or waterways.
Hill torrents in Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur districts in Punjab are also expected to swell. Moderate flooding is forecast at Kalabagh and Chashma, while light flooding is likely at Tarbela, Taunsa, and Guddu Barrages.
In Balochistan, flash flooding is possible in streams and hill torrents across Jhal Magsi, Kachhi, Sibi, Killa Saifullah, Zhob, Musakhel, Khuzdar, Awaran, Lasbela, and Kalat districts. Local authorities have been advised to prepare for possible evacuations and infrastructure damage.
NDMA reports that Tarbela Dam is currently at 74% capacity, while Mangla Dam is 44% full, raising concerns over additional rises in river levels if heavy rains persist.
Officials have urged provincial and district administrations to stay on high alert, ensure readiness for emergency response, and keep the public informed about risks. People living near rivers and flood-prone areas are strongly advised to take all necessary precautions.
Meanwhile, NDMA data shows that from June 26 to July 10, rain-related incidents across the country resulted in 90 deaths (including 45 children, 29 men, and 16 women) and 158 injuries. Heavy rains and flooding have also damaged 10 kilometers of roads, 8 bridges, 109 homes completely, and 243 homes partially.
