Rain, snowfall; Chitral-Peshawar, other roads blocked

CHITRAL: Rain and snowfall have been reported from across Chitral with the meteorological department forecasting precipitation for a couple of more days.

People coming home to celebrate Eidul Fitr from different parts of the country told ChitralToday that the Chitral-Peshawar road was blocked for several hours on Wednesday morning at Kaldam Gol in Drosh due to flash flooding in the stream.

On the other hand, Shandur pass connecting Chitral with Gilgit-Baltistan was also closed after about three feet of snow on its top.

Social and political activist Haji Muhammad Shifa of Drosh said that due to apathy of the NHA not only travellers on the long route but local residents faced immense hardship as Kaldam Gol blocks every time when there is even a light rain.

He said that due to incompetent officials of the NHA and alleged corruption in the organization, no steps were taken to keep the busy road open. He said parents were worried as their children could not reach home from school due to blockade of the road.

Moreover, flash flooding in nullas also blocked the dug-out Chitral-Mastuj road at different places, especially at Nardet and Shader Reshun. The road was also blocked due to landslides at Kari. The Chitral to Garam Chashma road is blocked after landsliding and avalanches at several points.

Meanwhile, the road to Kalash valley was also washed away by rainwater. The DC Lower Chitral office said that work was underway to reopen the roads.
