Chief minister becomes chancellor of universities

PESHAWAR: After an amendment to the law, Chief Minister Ali Amin has become the chancellor of public sector universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Recently, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly passed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa University Transfer Bill 2024 and sent it to the governor for approval, but the governor returned the bill with objections. The KP Assembly Secretariat on Tuesday issued a notification to make the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa University Reforms Bill 2024 a formal law under which the chancellor of universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will now be the chief minister. Earlier, the governor was the chancellor of all universities.
Under the amended law, the chief minister now has the power to appoint a vice chancellor from among the three names recommended by the academic search committee.
According to the amended law, the tenure of vice chancellors has been fixed at four years, but if the performance of a VC is unsatisfactory their appointment can be terminated any time.
