CHITRAL: A truck was impounded and its driver arrested after the vehicle was caught trying to smuggle deodar timber out of Chitral, the forest division said on Saturday.
A statement said staffers of the forest department and Chitral Levies stopped the truck at the Baradam joint check post and found it carrying illegal deodar timber. The driver has been arrested and damage chalked under Forest Acct 2022, it added.
Officials in the district administration told ChitralToday that the truck was smuggling the timber from Arandu out of Chitral.
Similar incidents occur frequently, but there are no stringent measures to stop the illegal practice of cutting trees and smuggling the timber out of Chitral as people with connections in power corridors are mostly involved in it.
