Chitral loses its iconic leader – RIP Shahzada Mohiuddin

Veteran parliamentarian by Shahzada Mohiuddin passes away

ISLAMABAD: Veteran parliamentarian and Chitral’s iconic politician Shahzada Mohiuddin passed away after protracted illness in Islamabad at the age of 84 years on Wednesday morning, his family sources confirmed to ChitralToday.

The funeral prayers of Shahzada Mohiuddin will be held at his home in Sairdur (Drosh), Lower Chitral, at 10:30am tomorrow (April 28), his sons former MNA Shahzada Iftikharuddin and Drosh tehsil Council chairman-elect Shahzada Khalid Pervez announced.

Shahzada Mohiuddin was born on August 5, 1938, in the royal family of Chitral.

He was considered an undefeatable politician who represented Chitral in the National Assembly of Pakistan by winning the lone seat of the valley four times.

In 1983 and 1987, he became the chairman of the District Council Chitral. In the year 1985, Shahzada Mohiuddin was elected to the National Assembly which was dissolved before completion of its five-year tenure.

He returned to the assembly in the 1990, 1997, and the 2008 general elections. In his last tenure, he also headed the Kashmir Committee of the National Assembly.

Moreover, Shahzada Mohiuddin remained the district nazim of Chitral from 2002 to 2007. He also had the honour of becoming caretaker provincial minister in 1990 and minister of state for tourism in the cabinet of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the early 1990s.

Shahzada Mohiuddin played an important role not only in the development of the backward Chitral valley but also for the promotion of tolerance and harmony among the local people.

His passing has created a vacuum in political leadership that will surely be felt for years to come.
