Chitrali girl murdered by husband in Swat

CHITRAL: The body of a girl married to a man in Swat was brought home in Chitral after she was allegedly murdered by her husband.

Local people told ChitralToday correspondent that the daughter of Miftahuddin, a resident of Orghoch, was married off to a man from Swat when she was just 12 years old and a student of class 6th. The marriage took place six years ago.

The couple had three children but relations between them remained strained. The locals said a few days ago the husband of the girl identified as Amirzada and his father stabbed the girl repeatedly leading to her death in Swat.

The body was later brought to Chitral and buried in Orghoch village. The Swat police are said to have arrested the alleged murderer and started an investigation.

Marrying off daughters, even underage girls, to strangers coming from outside Chitral could not be checked despite campaigns launched by civil society organizations. This is despite the fact that there have been numerous cases in which Chitrali women married off out of Chitral either faced domestic violence or even were murdered at the hands of their husbands or in-laws.

Moreover, the culprits in all such cases remained scot-free as poor parents in Chitral could no pursue court cases outside their home district.–S. Nazir Hussain Shah
