CHITRAL: Angry people of Laspur in upper Chitral gathered at the Harchin bazaar and asked the government as well as the education department to punish those responsible for the suicide of an orphan female student a few days ago.
“If the headmaster and a teacher of the govt high school Harchin are not arrested by August 24, all men and women of Laspur will launch a strong protest move and the government will be responsible for any untoward incident or a law and order issue,” they warned.
The protesters said that a Class-IV of the government high school allegedly harassed and tried to rape the second-year female student of a private college in December last year. They said the headmaster and a teacher of the GHS Harchin were witness to the incident and reportedly asked the victim to file a case against the accused in the court. When she approached the court, summons were issued to the witnesses but they did not appear before the court and even denied to be witnesses to the incident.
As a result, the student’s case weakened and she could not get justice. Losing all hopes she reached the GHS Harchin on August 5 and consumed poison in front of the staff including the headmaster and the other teacher.
But instead of trying to save her life, the headmaster closed the school at 10am and went away along with all the students and the staff. The poor girl remained inside the school fighting for her life and later died, said the area people.
They said the girl ended her life only because of the double standard of the two teachers who have been working in the same school for over 20 years and treating the area people as their servants. They said the government should take prompt action so that the widow mother of the victim could get justice.
