Zohran Mamdani Set to become New York mayor

NEW YORK: Zohran Mamdani is on track to become New York City’s next mayor after defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a stunning Democratic primary upset.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist and Queens assemblyman born in Uganda of Indian origin parents, led Tuesday night’s results by a wide margin, BBC reported.

Although he fell just short of the 50% needed to win outright under the city’s ranked-choice system, Cuomo conceded, acknowledging Mamdani’s victory.

“Tonight is his night,” Cuomo said. “Zohran has won this race.”

The concession marked an abrupt end to Cuomo’s attempted political comeback after resigning in 2021 amid sexual harassment allegations. His loss highlights a growing shift toward progressive leadership in the Democratic Party.

If elected in November, Mamdani would become the first Muslim and Indian American mayor in the city’s history. With New York City heavily Democratic, the primary winner is all but assured victory in the general election.

Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, campaigned on bold reforms to housing, policing, and public transit, energizing a young, diverse voter base across the boroughs.

Final ranked-choice results are expected next week, but Mamdani’s lead appears secure.
