ISLAMABAD, Jan 2, 2026: The federal government has announced a 14-member caretaker cabinet for Gilgit-Baltistan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, acting in his capacity as Chairman of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council, formally issued the notification for the formation of the caretakers cabinet.
The appointments to the caretaker cabinet were made in close consultation with the caretaker Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, Justice (Retired) Yar Muhammad, ensuring that the cabinet reflects the necessary administrative and governance expertise required for the interim period till the next elections.
The caretaker cabinet comprises Sajid Ali Baig, Engineer Altaf Hussain, Ghulam Abbas, Colonel (Retired) Abrar Ismail, Mehrdad Sharafat Din, Maulana Sarmad Shah, Raja Shahbaz Khan, Mumtaz Hussain, Dr. Niaz Ali, Syed Adil Shah, Bahadur Ali, Saeeda Fatima, and Abdul Hakeem.
The caretaker cabinet will assume office immediately, taking responsibility for the governance of the region until the next elected government is formed. This decision follows the completion of the five-year term of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, which was formally dissolved, with all ministers, advisers, and coordinators being de-notified in accordance with the constitutional process.
The move has been executed under Section 56 of the Governance Reforms 2019, following correspondence and formal instructions from the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Secretariat.
