Gilgit, Dec 18, 2025: The Election Commission has postponed the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections scheduled to be held on January 24, citing intensifying and extreme weather conditions across the mountainous region.
According to an official statement issued by the Election Commission, an All Parties Conference (APC) was convened to assess the prevailing situation and review the feasibility of conducting elections during the harsh winter season. During the meeting, a majority of political parties expressed serious concerns over public safety, transportation difficulties, and access to polling stations, ultimately supporting the decision to delay the elections.
However, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League–Nawaz (PML-N) maintained that the elections should be held on the originally announced date of January 24, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the electoral schedule.
The Election Commission further disclosed that 13 different political parties opposed proceeding with the general elections under the current circumstances.
After extensive consultations and deliberations, a consensus was reached to postpone the polls. The commission confirmed that a revised election date will be announced at a later stage after further assessment of weather conditions.
