Balochistan Passes Bill to Ban Child Marriages

QUETTA, Nov 14, 2025: The Balochistan Assembly today passed a bill that bans child marriages.

Under the newly approved legislation, individuals who arrange or contract marriages for anyone under the age of 18 will face severe penalties. The law stipulates a prison sentence of up to three years with a minimum term of two years. In addition to imprisonment, offenders will be fined up to 200,000 rupees with a minimum fine of 100,000 rupees. Those who fail to pay the fine will face an additional three-month prison sentence.

The bill extends its reach to anyone involved in promoting, encouraging, or facilitating child marriages. These individuals will also be held accountable under the law.

In a bid to ensure strict enforcement, the law mandates that Nikah Khawans (marriage officiants), marriage registrars and Union Council secretaries verify the computerized national identity cards of both marriage parties. Failure to comply with these requirements will result in a one-year prison sentence and a fine.

This legislation ensures that children, particularly girls, are protected from the detrimental effects of early marriages. It provides them with the opportunity to pursue education and lead a healthy, empowered life. Early marriages have serious consequences for children’s health, particularly young girls. By outlawing child marriages, the bill safeguards their physical and emotional well-being and guarantees better prospects for education and personal growth.

The law holds both officials and individuals accountable, making it a more comprehensive approach to preventing child marriages. It strengthens the legal system and provides clear guidelines for enforcement, ensuring that marriages are legally and ethically conducted.
