PESHAWAR, Oct 13, 2025: PTI’s Sohail Afridi won the election for Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, securing 90 votes in the provincial assembly.
Opposition parties, including JUI-F, PPP, and PML-N, boycotted the voting process, citing concerns over the electoral procedure and questioning its legitimacy.
Opposition parties decided to boycott the election during their meeting chaired by KP Assembly Opposition Leader Dr. Ibadullah. Senior opposition figures, including JUI-F parliamentary leader Maulana Lutfur Rehman and Akram Khan Durrani, attended the meeting.
According to sources, KP Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem tried to persuade opposition parties to participate in the vote, but they refused, remaining united in their boycott.
Earlier, Governor Faisal Karim Kundi raised objections regarding the resignations submitted by former Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur. In a letter to the assembly, the governor pointed out discrepancies in the signatures on the two resignation documents and questioned their authenticity. Despite these objections and the unresolved concerns of the opposition, the provincial assembly conducted the vote, resulting in Sohail Afridi’s decisive victory.
Sources reported that opposition parties may approach the Peshawar High Court to challenge the Chief Minister election process. PML-N has already prepared a petition in anticipation of filing it in court, indicating a potential legal dispute in the coming days.
Sohail Afridi’s election ends a period of political uncertainty in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and marks the start of a new administrative chapter under his leadership. The province now prepares to move forward under its newly elected Chief Minister, even as political tensions and judicial proceedings linger on the horizon.
