Irrigation department has recently built a protection wall along Chikan Gol of Brep in Upper Chitral.

Residents Feel Safer with New Flood Barrier

Brep, Oct 2, 2025: The Irrigation Department has completed construction of a protection wall at Chikan Gol in Brep after earlier carrying out channelization of the stream.

Deputy Speaker of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, Suriya Bibi, personally ensured that the project moved forward under the Irrigation Department to protect the community from recurring floods.

By channelizing the stream and constructing the wall, authorities have reduced the risk of flooding and significantly protected residential areas, agricultural fields, fruit orchards, and forest land this year.

Residents of Brep praised the initiative, thanked their elected representative, and said the project has finally given them a sense of security after years of repeated flood damage.

Meanwhile, the nearby Darkhot stream continues to face a severe crisis. Recent Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) have devastated the area, destroying vast stretches of land and wiping out nearly half of Brep. The floods displaced dozens of families and forced them into homelessness.

Unlike Chikan Gol, officials have not built any protective structures in Darkhot, leaving the population exposed to recurring natural disasters without flood defenses.

Community leaders have urged the government and concerned departments to act immediately and extend flood protection measures to Darkhot. They warned that without urgent intervention, more homes, farmland, and infrastructure will vanish under repeated glacial outbursts intensified by climate change.
