Supply of wheat from Punjab to Khyber Pakthunkhwa has created shortage and price hike in KP

KP To Challenge Punjab’s Wheat Ban In Supreme Court

PESHAWAR, Sept 23, 2025: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has decided to move the Supreme Court of Pakistan against Punjab’s ban on supplying wheat and flour to the province.

Official sources confirmed that the provincial government will argue in its petition that Article 151 of the Constitution bars any province from restricting the inter-provincial movement of food commodities. They said Punjab’s suspension of wheat and flour transportation has pushed up flour prices sharply across KP.

Provincial Food Secretary Shah Mahmood Khan said Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur had directed to immediately file a petition in the Supreme Court.

“KP depends on Punjab for 83 percent of its wheat and flour needs. The ban has severely disrupted the province’s food supply chain,” he said.

Punjab imposed the ban last month and blocked wheat and flour shipments to KP, creating shortages in local markets. The move has caused a steep rise in prices, with the cost of a 20-kg flour bag jumping by Rs1,050 to reach Rs2,200.
