Beware of Roadside Scam on Bus Stops!

PESHAWAR: Passengers traveling to and from Punjab especially Lahore have raised serious concerns about a roadside scam on bus stops.

They said that roadside vendors at highway rest stops sell burgers, chips, tea and other refreshments. However, these vendors allegedly commit cash-handling frauds targeting unsuspecting travelers.

A passenger from Chitral who traveled to Lahore last month shared his experience with ChitralToday. On both his onward and return journeys, he said, different vendors approached him and other travelers persistently. These vendors asked passengers to exchange small change for large denomination notes, such as Rs. 5,000, or sometimes requested smaller denominations. What seemed like a simple transaction quickly turned into a clever scam.

“Their method involves sleight of hand during the exchange,” the passenger explained. “Whether they ask for change or offer it, they subtly palm or withhold some cash after counting it in front of you.”

When the passenger pointed out the shortfall, a blame game began. One vendor claimed the amount was accurate, another denied it, and a third joined in. This escalated into a chaotic argument.

“In all the noise and confusion, your complaint gets lost, and your financial loss is buried beneath the commotion,” he added. The traveler suspected these scams happen either with silent cooperation from local authorities or due to their longstanding negligence. He said he narrowly avoided the scam thanks to a prior warning from his son, who had heard of these deceitful tactics.

“Both during my trip to Lahore and on the way back, I was approached persistently. But by God’s grace, I stayed cautious.” He criticized the current system. Instead of providing comfort to travelers, these roadside facilities have become safe havens for professional swindlers.

Travelers from Chitral, Gilgit-Baltistan and other northern regions who often travel to Lahore and other cities must stay vigilant. Avoid exchanging cash with roadside vendors and watch for suspicious behavior during stops. Carry smaller denominations and keep money secure to prevent scams.

Many passengers urged authorities to act immediately. They want thorough investigations and steps to eliminate fraudulent practices at public rest areas along major routes.
